Haines, AK...Lots of rain, eagles and no bears....

August 7th, Thursday
Leaving Canada and back into Alaska.  Left our new friends, Paul and Cecilia as they head west to Whitehorse, Watson Lake and then south to Prince George.  We are heading to Haines, AK, to spend a few days there and then take the ferry over to Skagway. The last looks of Alaska while heading into Canada for a few days.

Of course, I have to get a few more pics of the border crossings.

Am looking forward to Haines as this is where the show, Gold Rush is filmed.  Lin and I love that show as well as they say bears are feeding on salmon running in the river here.  This is where they count the salmon as they come across the Weir.

Parked the RV and off to Porcupine Creek!!  Got a few shots of the Historic Dalton Trail and Big Nugget Mine, but it’s a working mine, so can’t get too close to it.  The bridge is over the Porcupine Creek where "grandpa Schnobal" started the Big Nugget Mine. They're out working today, no signs of Parker Schnobal in the area. and the signs say no admit to the working mine, so I had to take pics from afar.  Did meet a few people here that go to church with the Schnobals and they say they are very nice people.  Dad's business, Southeast Road Builders and their house.  Think they would frown if we went up to their door asking for directions? lol. Or would that be considered "stalking"?

The bridge that Parker had to tear down and rebuild on the show.  Can you tell I like that show?  We watched several of the Alaska shows before doing this trip.  I'm not a fan of all of them,  but this one I like.

The bald eagles are beautiful here, looking for salmon.

This hotel honeymoon was too cute not to get a pic of while we were out looking for eagles.  Anyone need a hotel?

Off to the river to look for bear feeding on the salmon.  The pinks are running, lots of people are fishing, but no bear sightings. The Weir is area that they count the salmon coming thru.  Sat for about 2 hours, til almost 10, still can see the light, but mostly dusky.  The eagles are out and beautiful but no bear…Maybe tomorrow.

August 8th, Friday

Sight seeing today, quilt store!! Then on to look for more bear.  Sat for 4 hours on the river, a few eagles again, but no signs of bear.  The locals are telling us they have been a bit more scarce this year.
Boats have their nets out catching the salmon.

August 9th, Saturday
Lazy day, rainy and I have a cold!!  Whaaaa…my second cold this trip.  Hate being sick while traveling.  And I want to see some bears!!  Did get all my photos downloaded this morning, cleaned sheets and Lin is vacuuming and dusting the RV. Doesn’t take long to clean up.  Out to lunch to try the salmon and halibut here.  Pretty good.  Decided to get a few more pounds of sockeye salmon to put in the freezer. I told Lin we had to pay for them???
Drove around for a few hours, seeing more of the inlet, more of the river, but no wildlife, so off to Skagway tomorrow.
